“I was given the name of Joe Mew from a local ‘’born and bred’’ Lyme Regis resident and that is always a good way to start. First impressions also count and from our first meeting I felt that Joe was down to earth, honest and thoughtful and I knew that our house required a builder with all of these characteristics.
The Crows Nest was built following significant landslip and subsidence which required the previously existing house to be demolished. The site itself brought plenty of sensitivities and complexities being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Unesco World Heritage Site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. To add to the difficulties we wanted to build a contemporary house with complex foundations that allowed the house to be re-levelled with a series of hydraulic jacks in the event that we had further subsidence. It was also a very bespoke and intricate design that required a builder that was both considered and diligent.
The end result has exceeded all our expectations and is a truly fantastic house. Working with Joe and Grenville of Mew Developments has also made it a fun and exciting project to work on. Too often building a house can be both stressful and full of financial shocks but this was never the case with Mews. We worked on a relatively open book basis and I always felt that I could trust them both on quality and price. Exactly what you want from your builder!”
“It was during the early stages of building our house that I realised I had a builder that was prepared to go above and beyond what you would normally expect. During the sub structure phase we found that some of the engineering and architectural details contradicted each other. In my experience this is a classic situation that many builders would use to their advantage in terms of extending program and/or cost increases. This was not the case with Mew Developments and instead they just worked even harder to resolve matters and it was clear that they really cared about what they were doing.
Throughout the project we encountered the usual problems around information flow and details and in all cases Mew Developments were diligent and considered and always with a very pro active, positive and can-do mentality. Their communication style was also exceptionally good and particularly for us as remote clients we would receive a full set of photographic updates every Friday that allowed us to track progress.
Very early on in the project we decided that we would not appoint a separate Project manager as we wanted the direct contact with Joe and Grenville from Mew Developments. That decision rewarded us with a builder that was a pleasure to work with and who built a house of really outstanding quality in every area. They made the project exciting, fun and we now have a house that we are immensely proud of.”
Andrew Vaughan - The Crow's Nest
Undertaking a renovation is always a complex and difficult task. Add in an old building and even older barn to integrate, the fact that you live 150 miles away and have to work to pay for it and a budget that requires constant tweaking and you have yourself a potentially explosive mix. This is the situation we found ourselves in after we purchased a 19th century farmhouse back in 2013. Following extensive remodelling by our architects we then faced the task of finding someone to turn the dream into reality. We put the job out to tender with several reputable building companies in the area, one of which was mew developments. From the very earliest part of the process the relationship with Joe was different to other contractors He was very personable and easy to talk to from the out. I knew that who I chose to do the work on the farm could mean the difference between success and failure and also between enjoyment and frustration on my part. Joes appointment as our main contractor was probably the single best decision I made throughout the renovation process ( and there were a lot of decisions). From early on he was willing to work hard at finding compromise to hit budget constraints. Communication would be key as I would only be on site once every week or two. My commitment to Joe was to make timely decisions and his in return was to send what must have been gigabytes of information, progress photos and detailed queries and suggestions to me on a daily basis. The process worked well. There are always going to be glitches on a job, but it's how you resolve them that's the real key issues. There was plenty of honest discussions during the build, but at no time did our relationship change from anything but positive, collaborative and respectful. At the end of thousands of decisions, I have a building we are proud of, which was a pleasure to renovate and is a testament to Joe and the teams eye for detail and craftsmanship. The lads on the job were all incredibly friendly, hard working and skilled. For me this period was life affirming and it's very rare that people say that about a house renovation. Thanks to Joe Grenville and the team.

“A pause at last and time to write and express my appreciation for the excellent work of you and your great team. The calm, efficient atmosphere that they created has not been lost and it is a pleasure to be in the new building.
We are very, very pleased with the extension to the bungalow and the high standard of workmanship is evident wherever I look. People still comment on the seamless join of the roof and it was definitely right to put in the two Velux windows in the hallway. Now that the two bedrooms are in use, they don’t seem so small and I just love to sit in ‘my’ room and be quiet.
I cannot praise Joe and his professional team too highly. From the groundworks to the finishing, everything was completed on time and to the highest standard.
Simon and the team were a pleasure to have on site. They were quiet and friendly and despite terrible weather the site was always clean and tidy.
Joe’s weekly update with reference to the specifications for the build and Grenville’s fortnightly budget appraisal meant that we kept track of progress and costs.
Whether the job is a small conversion, an extension or a new build, I can unreservedly recommend Mew Developments to get the job done to everyone’s satisfaction."
